Crossley Heath School, Halifax
From Schoolforge-UK
The Crossley Heath School has been using Linux as a Proxy (Squid), Filter (Dans Guardian), DHCP and NTP server since Novemeber 2002. Dans Guardian has been particulary welcomed by teachers as it allows selective blocking of IP addresses which stops students from misusing the Internet during lessons. Currently this server is built on Ubuntu 6.06 LTS.
Below is a list of Open Source software available at our school: Firefox 2.0, The Gimp, Inkscape, Open Office, Audacity, VNC/Vncon, Google Earth, 7zip and Wordpress.
Moodle has been replaced with Frogserver, a linux based VLE but not Opensource.
What's coming: We are looking at using Novell SLED and edirectory to replace our Active Directory. This will give us access to Xen virtualization for which we are looking at providing our students with thin clients that give an option of choosing to use MS Terminal Services or some form of linux thin client, possibly Edubuntu or LTSP.
