We were looking to improve security and reliability on curriculum network, then running Windows NT. Also looking to reduce software and hardware costs. |
||
| Why use GNU/Linux? | Recommended by IRL / The Learning Machine. | ||
| Project Description |
Installation of new servers running Mandrake 8.2 to REPLACE Windows NT servers and to provide thin client services. Installation of new network cards with boot roms for linux thin client sessions. |
||
| Project Evaluation |
The bulk of the project went well. Some issues included HAVING to change the format of usernames due to Linux restrictions, teething problems with LDAP & load balancing and some cosmetic issues such as HAVING the school logo as wallpaper. |
||
| Future Uses |
Replace Windows with Linux on classroom computers. This is dependant on finding equivalent Linux software and peripheral compatibility. |
