Moodle
From Schoolforge-UK
Moodle is a VLE or course management system with a web based user interface that supports constructionist pedogogy. It has a large and rapidly growing user base of teachers who find it to be one of the most practical educational tools. It is strong on on-line social activites and E-learning features include Forums, content management, Quizzes and several activity modules. It's many interoperability features include intgration with Elgg and Learning Activity Management System (LAMS) and it handles SCORM objects. It is included in several Linux Distros including edubuntu.
The word Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, which is mostly useful to programmers and education theorists. It's also a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering through something, doing things as it occurs to you to do them, an enjoyable tinkering that often leads to insight and creativity. As such it applies both to the way Moodle was developed, and to the way a student or teacher might approach studying or teaching an online course. Anyone who uses Moodle is a Moodler.
Moodle runs on Linux using Apache, MySQL and PHP (LAMP stack), but is also regularly tested with PostgreSQL and on Windows XP, Mac OS X and Netware 6 operating systems. more...
