North Berwick High School is one of 6 high schools in East Lothian.

Decisions about IT hardware and software are highly centralised, and IT support for schools was historically provided by the Council's Corporate IT staff. Whilst there are now dedicated support staff for educational IT, they are still managed by corporate IT.

All schools in East Lothian run NT servers with Win2000 on desktops and laptops in high schools, and a mixture of Windows and Mac in primaries. East Lothian IT will not allow any pc with Linux installed to be connected to any piece of East Lothian IT equipment.

With the increase of .doc as a common format for email attachments, IT were faced with a problem in the primaries - the Macs were all running Appleworks, so teachers couldn't read .doc files. They took the decision to install StarOffice on all primary machines, and this has now filtered up to the high schools, so we now have StarOffice and MSOffice on all high school machines.
