Cutter install Open Source mail server
Northampton School For Girls required a comprehensive email system to be installed which would meet simultaneously the needs for open interfacing, high volume, good filtering capabilities, easy upgrades and low cost. Approximately 2,000 user accounts would need to be supported.
External tenders based on a detailed specification ranged from expensive to ridiculous with the Cutter Email System tender being by far the lowest yet also offering the broadest range of facilities. The email server provides:
- SMTP mail handling
- Access to individual mailboxes from any standards-compliant mail program (such as Outlook, Eudora, Thunderbird etc) via the standard POP and IMAP protocols
- Authentication of user ids and passwords from an LDAP directory
- Virus, spam and content filtering free of charge
- An integrated webmail interface which is user-customisable
- Management and monitoring tools
The server was installed and commissioned and immediately put into production use. It has proved to be reliable, popular with its users and undemanding in terms of day-to-day administration. The virus, spam and content filtering need occasional updates but apart from that it mostly runs itself.
Cutter Install Open Source Network Monitoring
Northampton School For Girls are now running a full network monitoring system based on Nagios and Cacti.
It Monitors 5 RM Windows Servers, 1 Linux mail server, all core snmp capable switches and printers.
