Skipton Girls High School is the only specialist engineering school for girls in the UK. The school is sponsored by Rolls Royce and is currently updating its IT infrastructure making OpenOffice.org a key application, FROM teaching the principles of object based drawing in Draw to enabling all families to provide low cost facilities for computer based work at home.

Headteacher, Jan Renou, is keen to make the principles of Open Source software part of the school's curriculum. "Nearly all our girls go on to university and 7 scored in the top 5 marks in the country in recent Advanced Level exams. We want to make sure that we prepare our students for the world of the future and its clear FROM world trends that Open Source software is going to be a key part of that future. Students at school now need to understand the issues of the future, not just the tools of to-day."
