Discussion list

The Free Software Collaboration has a discussion list <softcollab@schoolforge.org.uk>.

The list is hosted by GoogleGroups, where it is known as Schoolforge-UK Software Collaboration. It is an "open group", which means that anyone can search the archive of messages via Google without joining the list. You can view the archive of messages here (http://groups-beta.google.com/group/sf-uk-softcollab).

Only list members may post messages. To join the list and post to the group, you must register with GoogleGroups and then subscribe to the list:

  1. Point your web browser at http://www.googlegroups.com, and click 'Sign up now'
  2. Type in your current email address (or the address you want to use) and a password
  3. Complete the rest of the form as directed
  4. Take a moment to read the Terms of Service, then click "I have read and agree... "
  5. A confirmation message will be sent to your email address
  6. When you receive the message from GoogleGroups, click the link to activate your account
  7. Now you can sign in to GoogleGroups with your email address and password
  8. In the Group lookup box type "Schoolforge-UK Software Collaboration" and click the button
  9. Click 'Join this group' to subscribe. Now you can view the group messages
  10. Take a little time to find your way around the GoogleGroups interface. You only really need to use it to search the archive, but you can also alter settings, for example to receive messages in a daily digest instead of one at a time. Use the interface to unsubscribe when you no longer wish to take part in the list - so don't lose your password.

You post a message to the list by composing it on your desktop like any other email, and sending it to <softcollab@schoolforge.org.uk>. Some time after you send, you should receive a copy, indicating that it has gone out to all the other members of the group.

When replying to messages from the group, use the 'Reply To All' button to send to the whole list, or just click 'Reply' if you only want the original poster to receive your message.
