Freelance Open Source accessibility consultant, advocate and developer and member of the Mozilla, GNOME and Ubuntu accessibility communities. Technical author and computer basics trainer for over 50's. See fullmeasure.co.uk.
Previously Senior Software Developer working at Exeter College as the 'MIS Programmer', creating an MIS Intranet and data resources using mostly web and database technologies. I'm also on the schoolforge.org.uk Executive Board and co-web master. Blog.
Involved in Assistive Technology software, member of the BCS Disability Group, technical consultant for the Drake Music Project, volunteer for ITCH and write the occasional article for Ability Magazine. Working to bring Open Source to Assistive Technology Software, the OATSoft project is making it easier to locate OATS and help developers add the needed features.
Latest interests include the grass roots collaboration possibilities enabled by developments such as Open Source and Web 2.0. Various techniques for customising 'off-the'shelf' software to meet individual accessibility needs and how Open Collaborative Communities can involve disabled people. For example PowerTalk automatically speaks the text on PowerPoint presentations making them more accessible.
Have a broad background in communications, systems and applications development and embraced the FLOSS concept before I knew what it was. GNU tools such as GCC have been long-term friends and I now prefer to program in Python when possible. I've often dabbled with Unix/Linux but my main expertise is MS Windows and that is currently the platform that I most find in use, but I am very pleased that GNU/Linux systems are catching on.
Earliest OSS project contribution was fixing the Windows port of the GNU Solfege ear-training program.
My interest in education has increased recently due to working at a FE college and having children at KS1 who are enjoying working on their ICT skills with the INGOTS certificates.
